The Yungang Grottoes of Datong, Shanxi Province, house 252 caves and 51,000 statues, and represent the outstanding achievement of Buddhist cave art in China in the 5th and 6th centuries.

Unfortunately due to our poor grasp of Mandarin, the 19km journey resulted in a merry-go-round of two taxis and a bus.

Once there, we were overawed by the condition of the 1500 year old carvings.

Distinctly less touristy than the 60 RMB, Longmen Caves, and in a far superior condition, the Yungang Grottoes were a truly a site worth beholding.
